I purchased premium upgrade at walmart installed it, then ordered the 64 bit from Microsoft for 10 dollars. When I installed the 64 bit, it would not activate. I called customer service at Microsoft and got a hold of people from India and the Philippines who had no Idea what I was talking about, who kept transfering me from person to person, and the telephone connection kept cutting out. I went back to Walmart and explained the Microsoft 'run around' and they exchanged my copy for a new one.I plan to upgrade my hardware soon, will I have to go through this again, or is their an easier way?Bill. This is not permitted by the EULA; even though there are two digital versions (32 / 64), you have to choose one or the other.I'm not so sure that Walmart is being smart by accepting returns of opened software product.
If they try to sell it again, the next buyer will have a hard time when they try to activate the Product Key that you already used and gave back to Walmart. If the used PK goes right back to MS, then 'no harm-no foul.'
There should be no problem using disk imaging software to image your installation of Vista, but the nature of product activation and validation will prevent you from storing the backup as a deployed installation of Vista on another hard disk drive. Better to keep the image as an undeployed image and then if backup is needed, deploy it at that time. The act of deploying the image transforms it to an installation, and that installation then wants to be activated.EDIT: Forgot to answer your last Q. I installed the 64 bit on top of windows xp, same computer but not the same hard drive, then I used the product code from the vista i exchanged at walmart to activate it.I formated the 32 bit vista hard drive and cloned the 64 bit vista hard drive onto it. The cloned drive got the 3 day activation warning so, I formated that and I'm using it as a door stop now. Why can't I clone vista on another hard drive and keep it for back-up, that would seem to be the easiest most secure way?I exchanged exactly what I bought at Walmart for exactly the same thing, vista premium 32 bit.
